WC Auxiliary
|
County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has approximately 81 members, which put in nearly 6,000 hours of volunteer work a year.
The auxiliary does a wide variety of jobs at the hospital, including working the information desk, the gift shop, and working on different committees.
The auxiliary also does a variety of fundraising. They have uniform sales, angel food cake sales, jewelry sales and much more. All funds go towards the purchase of new items for the hospital.

SERVICES
Service Area: Gift Shop
Hours: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Daily
1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Daily
1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Weekends
Physical Requirements: Enjoy meeting the public.
Some standing.
Some record keeping.
Summary: A volunteer staffs the Gift Shop daily. The Gift Shop is a
public relations, and moneymaking area that requires the ability to
meet the public. The volunteer keeps a sales record for her time in
the Gift Shop.
Duties and Responsibilities:
|
| 1. |
Obtain the key from the ER Admissions
Office and unlock the door. Keep keys in your pocket or in a drawer.
|
| 2. |
The Gift Shop sales
record sheet is kept in the drawer of the display counter.
Sign your name and the date.
|
| 3. |
Remove the plastic
cover form the cash register and turn on the register.
|
| 4. |
Count cash in drawer
and record on sales sheet. This is always $35.
|
| 5. |
Write the name, price
and tax of items you sell on the sales sheet.
|
| 6. |
Before leaving for the
day count cash in the drawer. Total both columns (articles
plus tax) and write this amount in the blank space provided on
the sheet. This amount of sales is placed in the box, which is
in the top drawer of the cabinet.

| 7. |
Separate bills from
change and place bills in the money pouch.
|
| 8. |
Mark down if you have
an overage and/or shortage of money.
|
| 9. |
Money for newspapers is
kept in a separate box, not recorded on sales sheet.
|
| 10. |
If leaving for the day,
turn off cash register and cover it. Leave lights on, lock the
door and return the key to the ER Admissions office.

Sign out. Remember to
record your time in the Volunteer card file.

REMINDERS

We do take checks with
proper identification.

Note any supplies
needed and leave a note.

If you are also
responsible for the Reception Desk, place “Information Sign”
on the desk referring visitors to the Gift Shop.

Service Area: Gift Shop Managers
Hours: Checks Gift Shop daily
Physical Requirements: Standing, Purchasing, Record keeping (daily
and monthly)
Summary: Managing the Gift Shop is a public relations and money
making area that requires the individuals to be able to attend suppliers meeting for
selection
and purchasing of stock for the Gift Shop.

Duties and Responsibilities:

They are responsible for selecting and purchasing all the stock for
the shop.
|
| 2. |
Keep shelves neat and
clean.
|
| 3. |
Responsible for record
keeping.
|
| 4. |
Orientates and oversees
staffing of the volunteers in the shop.

Service Area: Information Desk
Hours: 8 a.m. to noon
1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Physical Requirements: Sitting and some walking.
Summary: Volunteers staff the Information Desk daily. The
receptionist is a public relations area that requires the ability to meet the public.
Duties include assisting and directing visitors, answering inquiries and
keeping current computer patient print-out up to date so a patients family and
visitors can be properly informed and directed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

| 1. |
Check with the Admissions office for current patient list and sort
patients’ mail.
|

A. |
Check name on the
envelope with the name on the list.
|
|
B. |
Write room and bed
number on envelope.
|
|
C. |
Arrange mail in order
according to the floor, room and bed. Bed 1 – next to door.
Bed 2 – next to window.
|
|
D. |
Pass newspapers and
give one to each room. For New Horizons patients, press button
on right wall next to the double doors. An employee will
answer to receive mail and newspapers.
|
|
E. |
If any patients are
children, give a puppet or stuffed animal to them.
|
| 2. |
Place information available in Gift Shop sign on desk before
you leave and take your patient list to the gift shop before leaving
to pass newspapers and mail.
|
| 3. |
Check with
nurse to see if there are any rooms that you should not enter.
|
| 4. |
Always ask
patient his or her name, unless asleep or condition is such
they cannot respond, then look at name on foot of bed and
leave mail on bedside table. Some patients may like cards read
to them.

| 5. |
Census
changes constantly. If the name is not on the list, the
patient may have gone home, so return card or letter to the
admissions office.
|
| 6. |
Be kind and
pleasant to everyone coming into the hospital. Learn different
areas of the hospital so you can give directions.
|
| 7. |
Return patient list to Admissions office when you leave for
the day.
|
| 8. |
Sign out.

Service Area: Tray Favors
Hours: Determined by Auxilian making favors.
Physical Requirements: It helps to be creative and artistic.
Summary: Making try favors is a public relations area that can
be done at home. Most of the materials are furnished by volunteers, usually from
supplies at home and with help from Auxiliary if needed.

Duties and
Responsibilities:
|
| 1. |
The committee usually makes about four (4) favors a month plus
holidays.
|
| 2. |
Due to constant
turnover of patients, it is possible to use the same ideas
over again. Often the color can be changed to fit the holiday,
season or event.
|
| 3. |
Check the number of
patients from list and make one or two extra ones.
|
| 4. |
The favors should be
small, no more than two (2) inches in height. The only exact
limit is in height because the trays are on shelves and there
is only a small space between trays and the next shelf.
|
| 5. |
The finished favors are
brought to dietary department and placed on dietitian’s
desk. The dietitian will have them placed on the trays.
|
| 6. |

Service Area: Roses
Hours: Determined by Chairman
Physical Requirements: None – sitting
Summary: Making roses to be sold in the Gift Shop is public
relations and a moneymaking area. The Auxiliary purchases the
materials for the flowers (petals, center, leaves, stems, baby
breath, Styrofoam and ribbons). The vases are donated, bought
at yard sales or purchased new, depending on the need.

Duties and Responsibilities:
|
| 1. |
The Chairman oversees
the making of the roses, the materials necessary and the need.
|
| 2. |
The completed roses are
put in vases with Styrofoam, baby breath and ribbon bows. They
are priced and brought to the Gift Shop to be sold.
|
| 3. |
Volunteers record time
in volunteer card file.
|
Service Area: Puppets
Hours: Determined by Chairman.
Physical Requirements: None but enjoy sewing.
Summary: The making of puppets is a public relations area that
may be done at home. Puppets are given to children from 3
years to 13 years old, while they are patients in the
hospital. The Auxiliary purchases some materials and some are
donated.

Responsibilities:

| 1. |
Chairman checks supply
to see if in need of puppets.
|
| 2. |
Pre-cut parts are given
to volunteers at Auxiliary meeting. The parts may be taken
home and worked on at their leisure. The finished parts may be
given to puppet chairman or left in the hospital Gift Shop.
|
| 3. |
The Chairman and her
committee then sew the parts together for completion of the
puppets.
|
| 4. |
The finished puppets
are then brought to the main nurse’s station on the first
floor and given to employee for autoclaving.
|
| 5. |
“Parts” of the
puppets consist of painted faces, stuffed heads made from pink
material, yarn hair, dresses with felt hands sewn in, collars,
buttons, and bows made of felt and hats made of material. The heads are stuffed with nylon stockings.
|
| 6. |
Volunteers are to
record their time in the volunteer card file.
|
Service Area: Stuffed Toys
Hours: Determined by Chairman
Physical Requirements: None, but enjoy sewing.
Summary: Making stuffed animals is a public relations area that can
be done at home. Stuffed animals are given to children from infants
(1 year) to 3 years. The committee furnishes materials with help
from the Auxiliary, if necessary.

| 2. |
The toys are made in
the home and brought to main nurse’s station to be
autoclaved.
|
| 3. |
Nylon stockings are
used for the stuffing.
|
| 4. |

Service Area: Putting together patient charts
Hours: Varies
Physical Requirements: Sitting and some standing.
Summary: Putting together patient charts is a public
relations service that relieves the nursing staff from non-nursing duties. The volunteer is
usually notified by a member of the nursing staff when charts are needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
|
| 1. |
Report to
nursing department to receive copy of chart and how many to
be made.
|
| 2. |
Nurse
will help with obtaining different parts of chart for you.
|
| 3. |
Ask nurse
if there is an empty room available. It’s easier if parts
of chart are laid out on large surface to be assembled.
|
| 4 |
When
charts have been assembled, return charts and supplies to
nursing station.
|
|
|
| Sign

file.
